Free HTML Portfolio Website Templates (Download & Customize)

Whether you are a designer, developer, photographer, or freelancer, a personal portfolio website is the single best way to show your work to clients and employers. You do not need to design one from scratch or pay for anything — there are excellent free HTML portfolio templates you can download, customize with your own content, and publish online for free. Here is exactly how to do it.

What a good portfolio template includes

Before downloading anything, know what to look for. A solid portfolio template has four essential sections:

• Hero section. The first screen visitors see: your name, what you do, and one clear call to action like “View my work” or “Hire me”.
• Projects grid. A visual gallery of your best work with thumbnails, short descriptions, and links to live demos or case studies. Quality beats quantity — six strong projects beat twenty mediocre ones.
• About section. A short bio, your skills, and a professional photo. Keep it human and specific rather than generic.
• Contact section. A simple contact form or at minimum your email and links to GitHub, LinkedIn, or social profiles. If people cannot reach you, the portfolio failed its job.

Also check that the template is responsive (test it on your phone), loads quickly, and uses clean, commented code you can actually understand and edit.

• HTML5 UP. Beautifully designed, fully responsive templates released under a free Creative Commons license. A favorite for stylish one-page portfolios.
• Start Bootstrap. Clean, Bootstrap-based templates and themes — many are free and well-documented, great if you already know Bootstrap.
• Tooplate. A large collection of free HTML templates including many portfolio layouts, all free to download and use.
• GitHub. Search “portfolio template” on GitHub and you will find hundreds of open-source options, often with live demo links so you can preview before downloading.

Always check the license: most of these are free for personal and commercial use, sometimes with a request to keep a small credit link.

How to customize text and images

1. Download and unzip the template, then open index.html in a code editor (VS Code is free and excellent).
2. Replace the text. Swap the placeholder name, bio, and project descriptions with your own. Keep headlines short and specific.
3. Swap the images. Replace the demo images in the template’s images folder with your own project screenshots or photos — keep the same filenames to avoid editing paths, or update the src attributes.
4. Adjust colors and fonts. Look for the main CSS file (often style.css or main.css) and change the accent colors and font families near the top.
5. Preview locally. Just double-click index.html to open it in your browser and check every section on desktop and mobile widths.

How to publish free

You can put your portfolio online without spending a cent:

• GitHub Pages. Push your files to a GitHub repository named yourusername.github.io and your site goes live at that address automatically. Free and reliable.
• Netlify. Drag and drop your project folder onto Netlify’s dashboard and get a live URL in under a minute, with free HTTPS included.
• Cloudflare Pages. Connect your GitHub repo, set the build command to nothing (it is plain HTML) and the output directory to /, and Cloudflare hosts it on its global network for free.

All three give you HTTPS, custom domain support later, and generous free tiers that are more than enough for a portfolio.
