WhatsApp Messages Not Sending? 8 Quick Fixes
You hit send, but your WhatsApp message sits there with a single grey tick that never turns into two. That one tick means the message left your phone but never reached WhatsApp’s servers — so the problem is almost always on your end. Run through these eight fixes.
8 quick fixes
1. Check your internet connection. Open your browser and load a website. If nothing loads, the problem is your connection, not WhatsApp. Toggle Wi-Fi off and on, or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see which one works.
2. Restart WhatsApp and your phone. Force-close WhatsApp completely, then reopen it. If messages are still stuck, restart your phone — this clears temporary network glitches that block the app.
3. Check if WhatsApp is down. Sometimes the servers themselves have problems. Search “WhatsApp down” on Google or check a status site like Downdetector. If there’s an outage, all you can do is wait — usually it’s resolved within an hour or two.
4. Update WhatsApp. Old versions can develop sending bugs. Open the Play Store or App Store, search WhatsApp, and install any available update.
5. Make sure your date and time are automatic. WhatsApp fails to connect if your phone’s clock is wrong. On Android, go to Settings > System > Date & time and turn on Set time automatically. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.
6. Clear WhatsApp’s cache (Android). Corrupted cache files can block sending. Go to Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage & cache and tap Clear cache. This deletes no chats or media.
7. Turn off your VPN and data saver. VPNs and aggressive data-saving modes sometimes block WhatsApp’s servers. Disconnect your VPN temporarily, and on Android check Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver is off — or at least allow WhatsApp unrestricted data usage.
8. Reinstall WhatsApp as a last resort. First back up your chats: in WhatsApp go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup and run a backup. Then uninstall and reinstall the app from your app store, verify your number, and restore the backup.
One thing to rule out
If only one contact’s messages stay on a single tick for days while everyone else works fine, you may have been blocked by that person — no fix on your side will change that. But if it’s happening with all contacts, it’s a connection or app issue, and the steps above will sort it.
The bottom line
Single-tick problems are a connection issue nine times out of ten, so start with your internet, a restart, and the server status check. Those three take two minutes and solve the vast majority of cases without touching your chats or settings.
